Racing Off To A Great Start After Season Opener
April 28, 2011
By Bonnie Nibblett
Delmar, DE…..The season opener at the fast half-mile clay track is off to a jubilee start for 2011. With Mother Nature wiping out pretty much the mid east coast on Saturday, April 16, there has only been the opener at the time of this writing; but what a start.
The five regular Saturday night racing divisions all had decent car counts. The big block had a 23 car count. Late Models’ there were 18, AC Delco modifieds had 17 cars, and the mod lites had 18 racers. The largest class of the season opener was the crate late model with a whopping 30 stock cars. The field would be full with 26 cars, so a consolation race was held to fill the last 10 cars.
Just as I had hoped there were quite a few new drivers in most of the divisions. Just the one race in, but it was a stupendous night of action and a lot to look forward to. The NAPA Big Blocks had 7 new arrivals from another class or another track. Local young drivers from crates went to Shawn Ward # 14K, Kyle Fuller # 68, and Jerry Carter II # 46 and from another track was Eric Korman # 16S. Then a few regular big block drivers had Ritchie Pratt, Jr. # 0, Scott Ambruster, Jr. # 11, and Larry Soloman # 517. The win went to our very own local driver Beau Wilkins # 90; his Father Bobby Wilkins graced victory lane numerous times in his career day. Heats were won by 2010 DIS Track champion Kenny Brightbill # 55 and the 2010 Redbud69racing.com Rookie of the Year Brad Trice # 33.
What a super 20 lap Late Model feature! 2010 World of Outlaws Late Models (WoOLMS) Rookie of the Year, Austin Hubbard had the night off from the touring series. Hubbard is a local out of Seaford and drives the # 19 Beitler Motorsports Super Late Model in the outlaw series. Hubbard started 7th and finished 2nd behind Richard Jarvis, Jr. A couple Sunday’s ago in the WoOLMS series Hubbard finished 11th in the NAPA of King William ‘Commonwealth 100’ at Virginia Motor Speedway and currently 3rd in the series points.
Jarvis, the 2009 Delaware International Speedway Super Late Model Champion, sat out the 2010 season and became a first time Father. But Jarvis returned this year sporting the # 680 his Father and he both drove when Jr started racing years ago. With the year off you would not had known that he didn’t race last year; by taking the win on the season opener at Delmar. Jarvis started 3rd, but with his new Lazer Chassis he was really hooked up and led 19 of the 20 lap feature. Heats were won by David Hill # 77, and Ricky Elliott # 88. Also in attendance was Ricky Elliott # 88 of Seaford. Elliott started 8th after the invert of the cars and finished 7th. Elliott must have missed his mark or his set up was off because he did not run quite as he usually does. Elliott runs part time with the outlaws.
The World of Outlaws Late Models (WoOLMS) will be at Delmar, Thursday, May 12, 2011. You don’t want to miss that show. This Saturday, the speedway track will have the Kyle Dixon Memorial with the 5 weekly divisions and the Slide-4-five. Come out to support the drivers and have fun.
The AC Delco crate mod class has a few new drivers added to this division on opening night. 2010 Mod Lite 3rd place points finisher Tyler Reed # 72 has made the change along with Trent Willey # 17T also former mod lite & kart driver. On the opener young Danny Smack # 25 had a very impressive run in the feature. Smack lead from the start and led most of the feature but succumb to Matt Hawkins # 38 and 2010 AC Delco DIS Track Champion Joseph Tracy # 37 after a couple of cautions. Not all the drivers were ready for the opener so look for more rookie drivers. Trey Hicks # 86 was one of the new Mod Lite drivers thus far; I’m sure more will be coming.
The season surprise of the night I would say goes to the Crate Model (Late) division with the 30 entries. It was the fullest field of the night. New drivers this year so far would be Derek Magee # 96, Kevin Witcher # 02, Kellie Lewis # 88, Stacy Robert’s # 14Z and Cody Dawson # 36. Magee has raced karts and the last couple years he ran in one of the Mod Lite Classes at Middleford Speedway. This year he plans to be at Delmar all season. Lewis has been driving a while, lastly she ran the 270cc Micro Sprints. Dawson # 36 was a kart driver and planned to start the 2012 season in crate model. However, while traveling home from a southern track the hauler trailer caught on fire while speeding down the interstate. They lost everything in karting that they had. So instead of having to replace all that equipment for one more season it didn’t’ see feasible so they went ahead and jumped into the crate this year. Billy Carr has also moved in from the crate mod class and Robert’s was in a mod lite before.
Therefore the season if off with a bang! There will be a lot of racing action every weekend at the Delaware Motorsports Complex located in Delmar, DE.
