The 21st season of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series will officially open on Wednesday night, May 26 with the Keystone Cup 410 Sprint Series, all taking place at the Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA.
The always exciting 410 sprints really know how to churn the one-third mile high banked oval and the one lap track record is 11.433, held by Jeff Shepard. The 410 sprints will complete in time trials and a series of qualifying events all leading up to the 35 lap, $5,000 to win feature event. Also on the program will be the first time visit by the sportsman to the Thunder Series. The sportsman will complete in a series of qualifying events and a 20 lap feature. The grandstand gates will open at 5:30 PM with racing taking the first green flag at 7:30 PM Adult admission prices will remain the same as prior years for this event, $20 for adults and $5 for children 6-11. Children under the age of 6 will be admitted for free.
The 410 sprints always offer a field of talented drivers to include defending Thunder Series Champion Greg Hodnett and four time winner at Grandview. Other expected entries include ten time Thunder Series winner Lance Dewease, nine time winner Fast Freddie Rahmer, Mark Smith, Darryn Pittman, Doug Esh, Chad Layton, Brian Leppo, Justin Henderson, Aaron Ott and Pat Cooper just to name a few.

This event will mark the ninety-second Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event. The first Thunder Show was presented in August of 1990, showcasing the 410 sprints in a event won by Stevie Smith of Hanover, PA . Since that time, the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series has evolved into more then just a series of mid-week 410 sprint car events. An ever-changing line-up of special events has been the major thrust of growth and recognition of this very popular racing series.
The Thunder Series promotional team of Grandview track owner Bruce Rogers and local publicist Bob Miller have reached out in 2010 with a new venture. Working with track management at the New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt, NJ, Miller and Rogers will promote a USAC Wingless Sprint and Big Block Modified double-header at the New Egypt Speedway on Thursday night, June 3. BOBBY VARIN RACING NEWS
Sharon Springs, NY- Bobby Varin Breaks the "Ice" And The Bank With Opening Day Triumph At Fonda
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Five time Fonda Speedway Modified Champion Bobby Varin picked up where he left off last Saturday as he quickly figured out the tricky Fonda Speedway track surface early on and then put on a clinic as he lapped up to the sixth place car on his way to an opening day triumph at the legendary Montgomery County speedplant. The opening day win was the third time in his illustrious career Varin has been able to win the opening Ice Jam event and the $4,000.00 payday capped a great opening event for Varin and the Fonda track as the speedway opened their gates for the 59th time in the storied history of the speedway. Varin, who ran out out laps one season ago in chasing down eventual winner Pat Ward, left nothing to chance this time as he quickly worked his way from his sixth starting position into the top three within the first five laps of the 40-lap main event. On the sixth lap of the event, Varin took to the outside to slip by Jim Davis and on lap ten moved past leader AJ Romano to gain command of the event. Varin was simply sensational as he quickly distanced himself from the remainder of the field and lapped up to the sixth place car when the checkered flag fell on the opening day event. Jim Davis did a great job in securing the runnerup role and Dave Camara was third. AJ Romano was fourth and Matt DeLorenzo drove hard from 18th starting place to complete the top five finishing order. Ronnie Johnson and Jeremny Wilder were credited with a tie in sixth place and Danny Varin was seventh in a great run for the second generation driving star. Mark Kislowski and Jeff Trombley completed the top ten.
The win for Varin was the 42nd Fonda victory in his career and now rests just one win behind the legendary driving great Bill Wimble, who scored 43 wins in his great driving career with his last win coming in 1967. Even though the win for Varin was a non points event, he was seeking to open the start of the Fonda season on a successful note. Varin had captured two opening events in the past, the first coming in 2001 and following again in 2005. This coming week on Saturday April 17th will find the Varin team back in action in defense of the Fonda track title Bobby captured for the fifth time in 2009. With the stellar field of top notch driving stars converging on the Fonda facility, each win at the speedway provides the special significance for those who can drive their hot rods into victory lane. The Sunday action on April 18th will kick in at the Utica Rome Speedway where Varin is hoping to get out of the blocks early on to enable him a strong opportunity at dethroning defending track champion Pat Ward. The Utica Rome event will kick off the "Thunder on the Thruway" series between Fonda and Utica Rome and will offer a $5,000.00 opening night prize for the winner of the 50-lap feature event.
With the first win of the young season out of the way, Varin is hoping for the same kind of success in the 2010 season that he enjoyed in 2009 when he captured fifteen wins at three different speedways in 2009 and along the way captured his fifth Fonda Speedway Modified title in the process. Varin was third in the final points at the Utica Rome Speedway. Varin has some exceptional racing equipment to choose from in 2010 and the primary race machines for the Varin Team will be the famous numbered 00 machines owned by Dave Cruickshank and Dover Brake fame and the new race car that captured the opening day win at Fonda was prepared within the last three weeks and has already proven to be a winner. Varin is now to defend his track title at Fonda Speedway and the team will also go after the Utica Rome Speedway championship, a title that has eluded Varin in the past. The Commercial Roofing Team race cars, owned by Ken Saya, will be utilized for the mid week and special shows Varin will be competing in throughout the season. Varin will also have the services of the Andy Romano/Marv Pedrick owned number 97 Bicknell race car for scheduled action at the Glen Ridge Speedway on Friday evenings.
Bobby's son Danny, who continues to excel with each passing season, was happy with his seventh place finish in his first start in 2010 and will look to improve upon his numbers from a season ago when he ended up the season with a 7th in points at Fonda and an 8th place finish at Utica Rome in his sophomore season in the Modifieds. The Varin team is hoping for more of the same success they enjoyed in 2009 as the new 2010 racing season begins at Fonda and Utica Rome. The car owner for the Varin Team is the legendary Dave Cruickshank and the hard working team is headed up by Crew Chief John Bakuzonis, and crew members Dave Cross, Jeff Preston, Tyler Preston, Bucky Loucks and Garret Sagatis. With additional cars in the stable for Varin with the Commercial Roofing entry and the Romano/Pedrick machine, the 2010 season will be chock full of racing from start to finish.
The Varin Family credits much of their success to their fine group of sponsors who continue to support their racing efforts. Dover Brake, Joe Bertothy Racing, JSB Fabrications, Land Designs, Supply Wagon Rentals, Rite Aid, Corigliano Towing, Leslie Home Improvement, GA Motorsports Media and Boys Club of America have all been solid in their support of the Varin racing efforts and encourage the racing community to support all of these fine sponsors whenever they have the capacity to do so. Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank their their loyal fan base for the strong support offered during the 2009 racing season and look for continued support into the 2010 racing season and beyond. More updates will follow shortly for the Varin Racing team efforts. DON'T FORGET KRAMER WILLIAMSON, URC PLANS BIG NIGHT AT DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
Some call him the Master, others call him Krafty Kramer and don't let the pink sprint car fool you. In any sprint car line-up, if the name Kramer Williamson is on the grid, butterflies could develop for all the other competitors. In sprint car racing, Kramer Williamson has pretty much done it all, including winning World of Outlaw feature events as well as the prestigious Williams Grove National Opener. On the Rislone URC Sprint Series, Williamson of Palmyra, PA is a three time URC Champion, taking the title in 1991, 1992 and again in 1995. Along the way, he collected sixty-six URC career victories, ranked fourth on the all time URC win list behind Glenn Fitzcharles, Dave Kelly and Buck Buckley.
Williamson brings a mix of "old world" racing and new age technology to URC. He'll be the first to say that the past several years have been a challenge, but he's optimistic about 2010 and making a return to the prestigious URC victory lane.
The new faces of URC have created quite a stir, bringing a stronger and at time, more aggressive style of driving. But for Williamson, it's really more of the same. In his career, he battled with the best and in fact, some of the very guys who wrote several pages in the "How to drive a sprint car" book. The WoO drivers have their style and of course, the PA Posse roster is a line-up of heroes and villains, add to that, Fitzcharles, Kelly, Buckley, Coverdale, Ely, Gollub and you pretty much cover the spectrum of talent.
Going into the Delaware International Speedway URC event on Saturday night, URC's heavy hitters include Trevor Lewis, opening day winner last Saturday night, defending champion JJ Grasso, the "thrill by the minute kid" Davey Sammons, six time champion Curt Michael and newly acquired Kevin Nouse. And this list could go on to include Randy West, Robbie Stillwaggon, Kyle Purks and Justin Collett. URC's roster has never been so jam packed with talent.
They'll all come together for race two of the Rislone URC Sprint Series Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. Gates open at 5 PM with race time set for 7 PM. The Delaware International Speedway is located on Route 13, Delmar, DE. For more information, please visit http://www.delawareracing.com<http://www.delawareracing.com> or visit the all new URC website at www.urcsprints.com
