Open House Big Success At H P Speed Karts – Parts – Graphix
Georgetown, DE…..This past weekend H P Speed Karts-Parts-Graphix of Georgetown, DE kicked of the 2010 racing season with the Annual HP Speed Open House. This has been a tradition for nearly ten years. It’s a way to get everyone ready to go racing and share the enthusiasms that all the racers crave before the season gets racing, stated Phyllis Hayes. We racers seriously crave that Need for Speed.
“We are a family operated business,” commented Charlie & Phyllis Hayes, “With our children’s help.” “Our son Chad can do it all, complete set ups, frames, scaling and Chad is also a tire specialist too, as well as building Hayes Power Engines. Our other son, Charles does graphix and has over 20 yrs experience. Phyllis and Shelby run the sales counter. Then our grandchildren Ashley & Macey help at the counter when they are here, stated Phyllis.
The business has been operating since 1986, but we moved to our location we are at now in 2002; located 22091 Lewes Georgetown Hwy, Georgetown. We grew out of room at our shop residence. 1992, our son Chad began to build motors, so we decided to start building engines and continue to do so.
Last year was the first time karters were offered to set up outside for others to sell their equipment, much like a flea market. It was a big hit last year, and this year was even bigger. The whole crowd this year was amazingly full. Charlie said, “First thing this morning there were so many people, I was afraid I didn’t know where to put everyone.” “It finally thinned a bit by lunch time,” he added. “I might add I was glad to have the business with the economy being so tight.” We had a big crowd to kick the season off.
Each year HP Speed shop has hosted the Open House where, owner, Charlie continues making the meatballs and Chili, which have become quite popular through the years and now a ritual. “Everyone comes to eat our meatballs and the chili along with a few other things offered” says Charlie. Door prizes were given away, special prices in purchases all were part of the Open House.
This year we decided to step it up and hold the First Annual Chili Cook Off. The winner would receive $100 gift card at HP Speed. There were 6 entries and we did not enter our own. We asked everyone to name their chili secretly and put the names of those under the bowls. Michael Reed was the winner with his “Mountain Smokehouse” and that chili was good. Second went to Kevin VanVorst “The Hornet”. Other entries names were Sweet & Sassy, 7 Alarm, Inferno, and CMF.
Judges Judy Hayes, (sister) and Bonnie Nibblett (Redbud69racing.com) sampled each chili and then retested the two runner ups. It was a unanimous decision by both judges for the “Smokey Smokehouse”. Charlie said kiddingly, “Next year I’ll do a meatball cook off too, then I won’t have to make anything?”
On a serious note we do hope to hold a Chili Cook off each year. Congratulations to our winner.
On a business note, this year a new motor is being introduced call a “Clone” Motor. This motor is similar to the “Crate” Motor with the cost being lower and affordable. A “Clone” engine will run $350, where the “Animal” Motor cost $1350, a $1000 difference added Chad. The Clone is a basic motor or standard and set format of rules. (A crate motor is a GM sealed engine that is run locally at larger local tracks for entry level Late Models & Modifieds.) The Clone will be for racers 15 years and up in age, with standard basic rules in 375lb class.
We would like to thank that participates that were in the contests and everyone that came. We’ve ready to get going and fill all your karting needs. We wish everyone a safe happy racing season. For more information check out our web site at www.hpspeed.net or call the shop at 302-856-7835. Open Tues. & Thurs. night 5 PM-9 PM, Saturday's 10 AM-2 PM.
