“Kevin Lynch Memorial—Night 2”
Night two of the Kevin Lynch Memorial at The Rock/Allegany County Speedway was on tap Sunday evening with B-Mains on tap to fill out the field for the $5,000 to win main event to be held later in the evening. Matt Sponaugle took the win in the first B-Main, while Kyle Merkel would score the second event. With the conclusion of the B-Mains the field for perhaps the most talented field of cars in Steel Block Bandits history was set.
The field lined up with Jack Pencil and Matt Sponaugle leading the pace lap in honor of the race’s namesake. At the green DJ Troutman surged into the lead , but the red would soon fall over the field when a massive wreck on the frontstretch blocked the track three laps in. Amongst the involved were Chris Harr, Bob Salathe, Mike Walls, Grant Adams, and Andy Anderson. After a long cleanup period the cars would take the green again with DJ Troutman once again asserting his dominance, while outside polesitter Joey Leavell began to fall back down the order. Walker Arthur, Bandits pointsleader, would take the second spot early over Jack Pencil early on.
At the halfway point the yellow flew for the halfway fuel stop, at this point in the event DJ Troutman had been the dominant force and locked in the lead, Walker Arthur, Kyle Lear, Jack Pencil, and Dylan Yoder(up from the 12th starting spot)rounded out the top five as crews made sure the cars were fueled up and ready to go for the second half.
When the field returned to green DJ Troutman’s torrid pace continued, the Hyndman, PA native looked to have the show well in the bag, pulling out to over a 10 carlength lead over Arthur and Lear. Shorltly after returning to green from the fourth caution Kyle Lear bypassed Arthur and moved into second, while Troutman lead. But as the field entered the 42nd lap trouble appeared for Troutman who had a bad coil and lost power to his machine. Kyle Lear of Pasadena , MD closed in and passed the faltering machine and swept into the lead as Troutman retired pitside. Trouble though seemed to be falling upon the new leader as smoke began to billow from behind his machine and the smell of transmission fluid hit the air.
With four to go Matt Sponaugle slammed the first turn wall and brought out the fifth and final caution. As the field circulated under caution the smoke billowed increasingly from Lear’s machine with Dylan Yoder looking to be the man to take advantage if the Lear machine did fall out. As the field returned to green Lear would pull away, and problems would not fall upon the 151 as Kyle Lear secured the $5,000 to win Kevin Lynch Memorial and take the Moe Defino crewed 1md Chassis to Ernie D’s Victory Lane for his first Steel Block Bandits win of the season and second of his career. Dylan Yoder would finish his charge from twelth on the grid in second with Walker Arthur finishing third and securing the special points series for the three Bandit events at the Rock this year. Kyle Merkel of Gilbertsville, PA who took the second B-Main and started 18th finished fourth with Bo Feathers of Winchester, VA rounding out the top five.
The Steel Block Bandits will be in action for the final time this season this Friday and Saturday night, the 22nd and 23rd of October at the Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in Markleysburg, PA.
