Calvin Hammond of Gumboro De. passed away this morning (Oct 23 06) from complication of emphysema. Calvin was 68 years old. He retired from Collins saw mill many years ago. He was a member of the Gumboro Volunteer Fire and Ambulance company for many years. He was past champion at the now Delaware International Speedway in 1971. Calvin drove stock cars in the now Little Lincoln division at Georgetown, Little Lincoln, and Delmar. He also raced at the memorable Harrington Fair races during fair week. Calvin drove for such owners as Clarks Garage Gumboro De., Coastal Construction of Dagsboro De. Calvin’s red #31 can still be remembered as a front running car every week at the local tracks and collecting many wins through out his racing career. The racing family will sadly miss Calvin Hammond. He was preceded in death by the passing of his wife Carol 10 years earlier. He is survived by four daughters, a son and many grandchildren.
