ndiana, PA (March 8, 2008) The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is pleased to announce its AlturnaMATS® MACS Rookie of the Year class for 2008. The 2008 ROY titlist will receive $2,500 in cash courtesy of AlturnaMATS® plus other prizes supplied by Ron Fleenor’s Race Art, Custom Painted Racing Helmets, Team Simpson, and King’s Jewelry, the Diamond Specialist.
The first driver competing in the 2008 AlturnaMATS® ROY title hunt is Michael Altobelli, Jr., 23, Saxton , PA. His racing career spans seven years with the last two piloting a super late model. Michael’s first five seasons were spent wheeling a Limited Late as well as an E-mod. Michael Altobelli, Sr. is the car owner of the #79 Rocket Grand Prix with Sunoco Race Fuels supplying his 415 Chevrolet that is mounted with Genesis shocks and shod with Hoosier Racing Tires. Michael, Jr., has one super late model victory under his belt as well as three ROY titles including two in his 2001 E-mod campaigns at both Bedford and Cumberland Speedway’s in addition to a Limited Late Model ROY title at Bedford in 2002. His resume also includes 26 Limited Late Model “A” Main wins as well as garnering the Chilli 100, and the 2007 Hesston Speedway Track Championship. His sponsors are: Northeast Land Clearing; Curtis Heath Funeral Home; Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic; Walter’s Auto Wrecking; Raystown Seamless Gutter; and M.W. Logging.
The next candidate is Thomas Baker, 27, Massillon , OH . Thomas’ career has spanned 11 seasons with all of them piloting a super late model. He has garnered two “A” Main victories along the way. Baker, an owner/operator, drives #3T Rocket Monte Carlo with Sunoco Race Fuels powering his 415 Malcuit Chevrolet which houses Genesis Shocks and Hoosier Racing Tires. His loyalists include Malcuit Race Engines and Schaeffer Oil.
The third contender, certainly no stranger to the Series, is #0D of Ron Delano, Jr., 45, Stoystown , PA. Ron’s career has crossed 16 seasons with the last four being spent chauffeuring a super late model. He also spent a four year stints in both E-Mods as well as the asphalt late models. He has six super late model “A” main markers to his credit as well as the Jennerstown Speedway Laurel Highlands 100 in an asphalt late model. Ron is an owner/operator, piloting a Rocket Monte Carol with Sunoco Race Fuels powering his choice of either a 440 or 430 Custom or Malcuit Chevrolet with Ohlins Shocks as well as Hoosier Racing Tires. His sponsors include Stoystown Auto Wreckers, Miller bumper to Bumper Auto Parts; and Black’s Specialty Service.
Colby Frye, 22, Dover , PA , is the fourth driver declaring his intentions for the coveted AlturnaMATS® ROY title. His career has covered just seven seasons with rides coming in super late models during the last three. Colby previously drove sprint cars for a season and limited lates for three years. He has earned four super late “A” Main victories as well as the 2007 Selinsgrove Speedway ROY title. Colby pilots the #F1 FRYECO Incorporated entry driving with either a Rocket or Warrior Grand Prix with VP Race Fuels supplying his 400 Clements Chevrolet. His chariots are equipped with Intregra shocks and mounted with Hoosier Racing Tires. His boosters are A & A Auto Salvage; Clements Auto; TC Race Cars; Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic; Speed Wrapz; Krenn Trucking and FREYCO Incorporated.
The next candidate is 18 year old Russell King, Bristolville , OH . King, a second generation pilot, is starting to shine following his dad, Rex King, a Big Block Modified standout for decades in the western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio . Russell has been racing for eight years. He graduated from the go-kart ranks in 2002 after 22 feature wins and two track championships. In ‘04 he moved into the Big Block Modifieds and was the ROY for both the Twin-States Racing Club as well as Tri-City Speedway (PA). In 2005 Russell scored three “A” Main wins in the Big Blocks as well as top 10 point finishes at both Tri-City and Sharon (OH) Speedway ’s. That year he also collected the Sharon and BRP Modified Tour ROY titles. In ‘06 he continued his accent in the Big Block ranks by claiming top five point finishes with both Sharon and the BRP tour as he notching two more “A” victories; one of which was a BRP Tour event. Also during 2006 Russell attended and graduated from the Finish Line Racing School. In ‘07 he grabbed three more “A” Main wins plus posting the BRP Tour Championship while still finishing in the top 10 in points at both Tri-City and Sharon . The sixth candidate is Donald Lingo, Jr., 23, Millsboro Delaware . Don has been racing 16 years and the last six have been in the super late models. Previously Don had rides in Go-Karts for six years followed by a three year stint in the Micro-Sprints. His Late Model prowess includes two consecutive track championships in the supers during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns at Charlie Cathell’s Delaware International Speedway. Don drives the Alex Beaumont #22A Rocket Monte Carlo with Sunoco Race Fuels supplying the 430 Jules Chevrolet with both Ohlins shocks and American Racers mounted. His sponsors are A&R Body and Frame and Pucketts Construction.
Warren, Ohio’s Tony Lombardi, 41, is the seventh contender for the AlturnaMATS® ROY title. He has been actively participating in the sport for 23 years with the last 14 in a super late model. Tony has one career “A’ Main to his credit. He chauffeurs #02 MasterSbilt Monte Carlo supplied with VP Race Fuels powering either of his 402 or 421 Ross Chevrolet’s.
