Mid-Atlantic Championship Series
Elliott Repeats As ‘Big Kahuna ‘Winner At The Rock’ While Covert Clinches the MACS Championship
Cumberland, MD (October 6, 2007) Rick ‘The Rocket’ Elliott found the fast way around Rick and Ernie Jones’ Oval Track Promotions, Allegany County Speedway as he held off a hard charging Jeremy Miller copping Saturday’s finale of the ‘Big Kahuna VII’. This was Elliott second year in a row claiming the final nights action at ‘The Rock’s’ “Big K”. Coupled with Elliott’s win, another winner emerged and that was York Haven, PA’s Jason Covert. Covert marched from his 17th starting position to finish fourth becoming the first back-to-back Mid-Atlantic Championship Series champion since National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee Lynn Geisler accomplished that feat during the ‘99 and 2000 season.
Elliott and 2007 Lernerville Speedway track champion Alex Ferree led the pensive field to the green with Elliott popping ahead as Ferree slid out of the groove in the first corner falling back to fourth. Jeremy Miller took advantage of Alex’s misfortune to pull into second followed by 2007 ‘The Rock’ Allegany County Speedway champion and Series regular, Jack Pencil. Rick and Jeremy pulled away from the field as Gary Stuhler, who is tied for all-time career wins with Bob Salathe at “The Rock”, coasted to a stop on lap eight bringing out the first of five cautions.
The ensuing ‘Delaware’ style restart saw Miller jumping to the outside of Elliott as they barreled into the first corner. The duo raced side-by-side into and through turn two but Ferree, who tried to follow Miller on the outside, could not get his Rocket to stick and as a result made contact with the outside retaining wall. Ferree’s mount climbed the wall momentarily before coming back down sitting perpendicular to the field.
When racing resumed, Elliott continued to lead as Covert worked his way under Boom Briggs to move into the top five. The field was slowed for a third time on lap 13 when Dave Troutman’s mount came to a stop in turn four. At that juncture, Elliott and Miller pulled away on the restart. Covert now in position, challenged Pencil for the fourth spot. As those two MACS champions locked up in a torrid battle, Friday night’s runner-up, Steve Casebolt maneuvered his way around both drivers to move into fourth.
After a quick caution on lap 18 for David Scott, Casebolt made his way past Scott Haus to move into fourth. Two short laps later Haus pulled off the speedway with what appeared to be terminal damage. The reorganized top five saw Elliott still on the point over Miller, Pencil, Briggs and Covert. Briggs and Covert battled lap after lap for the fifth. On lap 33, the fourth place car of Pencil came up lame blowing a motor in turn four to bring out the final caution.
As the green flag fell again, Elliott was not going to be denied his second major MACS career win as well as his second straight ‘Big Kahuna’ finale victory. Following Elliott at the stripe was: Miller, Casebolt, from 14th, Covert from 17th, and Briggs from 10th. The second flight of drivers was led by Rod Conley, from eighth; Matt Lux, from 13th claiming the 2007 MACS Rookie of the Year title; Jackie Boggs from 15th; Jim Yoder, from 19th; and 12th starting Tim Dohm finished 10th.
(Series Champion and Rookie of the Year stories will be released soon)
