Big Kahuna VII starts tonight
October 3, 2007
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Tonight's open practice sessions kick off activities
for the seventh annual Big Kahuna, the marquee race at The Rock,
Allegany County Speedway and the crowning event for the Mid-Atlantic
Championship Series (MACS).
Two MACS events will be held Friday and Saturday night, with main
events of 44 laps paying $5,000 to win each night. An estimated
$66,000 in total prize money is up for grabs for the weekend.
Gates open Friday and Saturday for the pit area at 2 p.m. and for the
grandstands at 4 p.m. Warm-ups are scheduled to start at approximately
6:15 p.m. each night. Time trials for the Super Late Models will
follow at approximately 7 p.m. A program of heats, consolations and a
dash will take place for Super Late Models each night.
Jason Covert, of York Haven, Pa., survived the competition and
freezing temperatures to prevail as the 2006 series champion after
last season's Big Kahuna. He returns as the leading contender for the
2007 championship over Rod Conley, Wheelersburg, Ohio; Mike Balzano,
Parkersburg, W.Va.; Doug Drown, Wooster, Ohio; and Matt Lux, Franklin,
Pa.
Lux is battling with Frostburg driver Chuck Clise for the series' top
rookie title. Vienna, W.Va., driver Steve Shaver and Seaford, Del.,
driver Ricky Elliott are the defending race winners. Last year's
weekend had over 50 entries.
General admission is free and pit admission is $20 for practice.
General admission tickets are $25 for each race night. Pit admission
is $35 each night. Discounted general admission tickets are available
for children ages 6-12 at $10 each night. Children age 5 and under are
free.
TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks and American Outlaws classic cars will also
be competing on Friday night. Allegany Scrap Street Stocks and
4-cylinder Junk Cars will compete on Saturday.
