CUMBERLAND, Md. (November 4) - Rick "The Rocket" Elliott, Seaford, DE, garnered his career first Mid-Atlantic Championship Series win in the Big Kahuna VI finale at Rick and Ernie Jones', "The Rock" Allegany County Speedway, Cumberland MD.
In victory lane Elliott commented on his win "I knew Jason (Covert) was running second to me for the longest time and I knew he was point racing so I figured he would be pretty conservative, So I figured I'd be in pretty good shape. Congratulations to him, I see he won the MACS point championship. But, I knew if we stayed in the groove we'd be in pretty good shape. I just want to thank all of the fans for coming out as cold as it is, I know we all don't want to see the season end but, its here."
Tension filled the moon lit sky, not only for the upcoming 44-lap Big Kahuna finale, but also the MACS championship title was at stake. Jason Covert led the season long points battle going into the event by a scant 30 points over defending Series champion Mike Balzano. Covert was third on the grid while Balzano was locked in fifth.
The drama was unfolding as Elliott, and Big Kahuna opening night winner, Steve Shaver paced the 26-car field starting field to green. The crisp night air was soon filled with high octane excitement as Elliott bolted into the lead followed by Covert, Shaver, Jeff Rine, and Balzano.
Elliott was awesome as he set a blistering pace. Covert did everything within his power to keep up with the fleet Elliott but was also attempting to keep breathing room between himself and Balzano for the title.
The first of four cautions appeared on lap 10, for former Series champion, Jack Pencil, as Elliott had already caught the tail of the field. As the field was reset for the double file restart, Steve Casebolt, who had started eighth as well as former Series champion, Chuck Harper retired from the event.
Elliott gathered the field and was flanked by Covert who was followed by Rine, Balzano, Stuhler, and Donnie Moran, from ninth. Elliott and Covert started the race again at the cone with Elliott flexing his PRO Power muscle and he vaulted ahead of the pack.
Opening lap 11, Rine in a dazzling move, catapulted past Covert taking second with Stuhler now fourth over Moran as Balzano slid to sixth. The second caution flew on lap 12 for Jeremy Miller, as his steering broke just short of the start finish line sending him into a wild spin. Luckily, everyone was able to take evasive action completely missing the disabled Miller. Jeremy's night came to a disappointing conclusion.
Elliott remained on point for the final double-file restart. Rine sat to his right followed by Covert, Stuhler, Moran and Balzano. As the green flew again, Covert proved he wasn't settling for anything as he passed Rine for second on lap 13.
As Elliott was dominating he was being fiercely chased by a quartet of contender. With halfway being shown, Elliott created a sizable cushion between himself and Covert who was contending with Rine, Moran, Moran, and Stuhler.
Elliott entered heavy lapped traffic on lap 24 and was working it to near perfection, but so was Covert. Moran snuck by Rine on lap 31 while the duo was engaged in a spirited battle with several lapped machines. Moran netted second from Covert just prior to the final caution appearing on lap 38 for Rine who exploded a tire at the flagstand evaporating a great run.
For the final time, Elliott regrouped the field behind him. Moran was now firmly on his rear bumper followed by Covert; Stuhler; Bernheisel, from 17th; and Balzano. Elliott fired the field at the cone and took off like a streak with Moran desperately trying to real the lead back in. Moran had Covert swarming around him as he tried to fend off his challenges. Elliott led the rest of the distance to the checkers followed by Moran, Covert, Stuhler and Bernheisel. The next tier of five included Balzano, Andy Anderson, from 14th; Tim Dohm form 11th; Devin Friese, from 15th; and "Hot Rod" Rod Conley, from 21st.
After his third place finish and clinching the Championship Covert commented, "It is great racing with all of these guys especially with Mike (Balzano) and Jimmy (Bernheisel) they taught me a lot but I still have a lot to learn yet and this guy (Balzano) is nothing but class, he's the classiest guy I've ever raced with."
The ecstatic champion continued about his season, "The main thing was that we qualified every night; we didn't have to start in the back very often. We got in through our heats and got into the dashes a lot and that always gave us a good starting position for the feature. (Traveling with the Series) We got to go to a lot of different tracks which is something I have wanted to do for a long time. The decision to travel was made after Hagerstown when we were in fourth or fifth in points so we decided to follow (the Series) since we were high in points. Then after a while we were leading so that made us really put our foot down and give it a shot. I really got to thank Barry who owns everything for giving me an opportunity; what else can I say, I appreciate everything he has done, (as well as) Brian, and the whole crew for working diligently on this thing. I want to thank Rick Eckert, my wife, my whole family, Red Wing Shoes; Pre-Mach, Inc.; Hershey Racing Engines; Kuppy's Diner, Bam's Auto Center, American Racer, Rocket Chassis, Ohlins Shocks, Autolite; Mazak; and Rick Kaylor, Jr. Computer Consulting. We're just really pleased and I also want to thank the MACS guys for putting on a real classy deal this year."
