ACCORD SPEEDWAY NEWS
Accord, NY - Accord Speedway Completes Final Practice Session And Sets The Stage For Opening Night April 16th With Scott Harvey Memorial Race
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
In a complete turnaround in the weather pattern from a week ago, frigid temperatures and brisk winds met 70 plus racers and a sparce crowd who braved the frigid weather as the Accord Speedway hosted the second of two scheduled practice sessions scheduled at the raceway in preparation for the opening event of the season scheduled to kick-off on April 16th with the running of the Scott Harvey Memorial for the VP Fuels/Rhinebeck Ford Modified division that will pay $2,000.00 to the winner who drives his car into the Lucas Oil Products winners circle. While the crowd on hand huddled the best they could to keep warm, the pristine quarter mile raceway was in tip top shape for the four hour practice session that moved along quickly throughout the evening. While a few of the Modified cars were able to crank off some quick laps under the magical thirteen second per lap barrier, all were within a few ticks of each other and the performances will set the stage for an unbelievable year predicted at the "Gem in the Catskills" speedplant. Many more new faces and some great new equipment arrived at the speedway throughout the evening and hard-working Promoter Gary Palmer and his track staff presented the racers with a near perfect race track for the evening event. The Palmer Family has been in control of the Accord facility since 2000 and will officially open the speedway for the tenth time since they took over the ownership of the speedway and the excitement level for the new season has reached a fever pitch with many new drivers arriving on the Accord racing scene and an abundance of regular performers taking some new steps into different divisions and the many changes should provide the magic for the best season to date for the Palmer Family.
A standing room only crowd is expected for the opening night event and racing fans should make note to give themselves plenty of additional time to travel to the speedway as there are a few detours heading to the speedway from their respective areas. All competitors using the Route 213 route to the speedway in Rosendale, New York between Cottekill and Binnewater Roads, may want to consider to use an alternate route to the speedway. Those heading to the speedway from Pennsylvania cannot cross the bridge into New York on Route 209 and must travel to the first exit and follow the detours signs to be re-routed back to Route 209 North or travel to Route 17 West to connect with Route 209 for the trip North to the speedway. The 2010 Accord Speedway racing schedule is now complete and is available online at the revamped speedway website. Driver profile sheets are available online and print ready for completion and will also be available for drivers to fill out and update in order to get a jump start on the busy season ahead. While the initial rosters have been posted, many changes will occur in the next few weeks as the racing equipment is completed for racing action and the website staff will make the necessary changes on a weekly basis.
All of the Friday evening regular divisions were well represented last evening as well as some of the Wednesday night Quad racers who joined in to shake down their equipment for the new season. New Modified cars on hand for the evening included Rhinebeck, New York's Brad Rothaupt, who will vie for rookie of the year honors in a beautiful new mount created over the winter months. Fastenal, Troncillito Trucking, James Auto Sales and CJ's Pizza will provide the financial support for the third year driver who finished up last season in 10th place in the 2009 Sportsman points. Lake Katrine, New York's Vinnie DeCicco shook down his refurbished racer as Vinnie begins his second season in the Modified ranks with help from Universal Metal Fabrications, Hudson Valley Hearing and H Jarvis Contracting. Two time Spec Sportsman titlist Jeff Richardson was shaking down his new mount for 2010 as he moves into the Modified ranks aboard one of the Jeff Mastrocola mounts as a teammate to former track champion "Iron" Mike Ricci. Jersey-ite Neil "The Wheel" Harris will be making the Accord Speedway his home in 2010 and has taken quite well to his new surroundings with a very quick Earth Tech Excavating, Harris Motorsports race car. Second year performer Robbie Rowe had his Hubbard Services machine working to perfection as the drivers could race wall to wall on the well-groomed race track. Scott Ferrier, David Bush, Lex Burritt, Rick Mill, Danny Creeden, the returning "Iceman" Dom Roselli, Robbie Green and Mel Schrufer provided extraordinary depth to the Modified roster and another Garden Stater, "The Jersey Gasser" Ricky Wegner was hustling his Ideal Auto Body, AW Contracting, CRG Truck Repair, Hansen Racing Engine sponsored mount very quickly around the race course. The "Quack Attack" Geoff Quackenbush was back out in his recently purchased machine and is quickly learning the ropes of the Modified division as the Sprint car ace has quickly found the short way around the Accord speedplant. Local racing icon "Showtime" Danny Tyler had the fastest times of the evening as Tyler tried both of his mounts on for size and was pleased with the performances of both machines.
Bryant's Towing Pure Stock division cars on hand for the evening included the much improved Eugene Helms, Paul Aragon, Joe Knoth, Ryan Johnson, newcomer Brian Elem in his maiden voyage in former racer Bill Bulson's mount and a return to action from "Smokin" Joe Narok in the Above All Automotive sponsored entry. The Pro Stocks, now sponsored by DC Landscaping, also had a stout showing as Bill Rion, Larry Temple, Torin Betterton, Richie Scott and Gary Ronk were among the group that made it out for the final practice. Sportsman cars on hand included Greg McCloskey, Jeff Hulseapple, Kenny Ferrier, Al Archiere, Kevin Ward and newcomer Kevin Krom. The Spec Sportsmandivision now sponsored by the Healey Brothers Group enjoyed a solid showing with many drivers taking their maiden voyages in their freshly minted equipment. Among the hopefuls completing the final practice sessions included 2009 Pure Stock Champion Tommy "Tommy Gun" Johnson as he continued to put some laps on the former championship car of Jeff Richardson he purchased at the end of the season. Anthony Perrego, Nick Plumstead, Chris Stevens, Phil Recchio, Kyle Rohner, Danny Cross, Tom Tersillo, Kyle Cicio, Joey Decker, Kyle Van Duser, Scot Sanford and Tom Cole were among the drivers who shook down their new mounts last night. It was Sanford, a former top performer in the NMRO Mud Drag competition, who provided the excitement towards the end of the evening as the first year performer lost the handle coming out of turn two and made hard contact with the unforgiving boiler plate that sent him into a series of barrell rolls that landed him on his roof after the scary incident. Sanford was unhurt in the incident but the race car suffered severe damage.
All feature events for the Modifieds will offer $2,000.00 to the winner. The Friday night racing will culminate with the running of the King of the Catskills weekend set for September 24th and 25th. The yet to be determined distance of the ROC Modified portion of the event will once again see $6,000.00 awaiting the winner of the feature event in the Lucas Oil Products winners circle.. A series of qualifiers will be in place in conjunction with other area speedways in an effort to have all of the speedways working together in a cohesive manner. The new American Racer East Coast Modified Cup program is in place at Accord and will provide some excellent opportunities for the drivers and teams in 2010. The Accord Speedway management is appreciative of all of the assistance they have received from track sponsors Lucas Oil Products, VP Fuels and American Racer, all divisions sponsors Rhinebeck Ford, Camper's Barn, DC Landscaping, Healey Brothers Group and Bryant's Towing, all of the many speedway billboard sponsors and the great fan base for their continuous support of the great racing found at the Accord Speedway.
Midweek Madness will kick-off on June 9th and the speedway will once again have go-karts returning to the weekly Wednesday racing activity under the rules of the WKA. To compliment the full show, the speedway will have 270 winged Micros and 600 wingless Micros going to war on the Accord high banks and the addition of those two exciting divisions will produce some excellent side by side racing on the ultra-wide channeled speedway. An additional race series in conjunction with the 1/5 mile Hamlin Speedway in Pennsylvania, will find the 600's being added to the Friday evening card for four shows and the home and home series known as the Keytstone/Empire Series will offer four Saturday nights at Hamlin as well. The 270's and 600's will be included in the King of the Catskills weekend.
Special Shows will once again be part of the 2010 Accord scene. Fireworks will fill the air on July 2nd as "Wild Bill" brings in his one of a kind light-show extravaganza to Accord and July 16th will feature the return of the now 71-year old ARDC Midgets for a full card of racing activity with the "Clash in the Catskills" as their "Side by Side and Three-wide" racing action will feature reigning series champion Frank Polimeda. He will be taken to the limit as veterans such as PJ Garguilo, Chris Zrinski and Steve Lenig and seasoned youngsters such as Nick Wean, Ryan Smith, Trevor Kobylarz and Brett Arndt will provide plenty of competition as will lady racer Stephanie Stevens. Newcomers such as Aussie teenager Brad Cox and 600 converts Alex Bright, Parker Evans and Justin Grosz will add solid depth and talent to the ARDC roster. Veteran USAC open wheel star Johnny Heydenreich will serve as the Grand Marshal for the special event and the event will also see "Hot Rod John" in competition during the evening in one of car owner Jerry Steward's Midgets. During his stint with the ARDC, Heydenreich captured 36 feature event wins before he made the move from his native Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania home to the Hoosier State of Indiana. Heydenreich will also be in action at the Hamlin Speedway the following evening on July 17th. July 23rd will find the annual Joe Winne Memorial event taking place with track champion Jerry Higbie being the winner of the prestigious event the past two seasons.
Admission for the great racing action remains the same from a season ago as Adults (12+) will be $12.00; Children (11 and under) will be $3.00. The Family Value Pack that was met with much success last season is once again offered and is: 2 Adults, 2 Children, and $20.00 in food vouchers for $40.00, a savings of $10.00 to the consumer. Pit Gates open at the speedway at 4:30 and Spectator Gates open at 5. Hot laps kick off at 6:30 and the racing is slated to start at 7 PM.

Rob McCormick Takes Mountain Madness Enduro at Sundance
Drivers Set Fast Time for Opening Day
By: Gene Ostrowski
April 10, 2010
St. Johns, Pa- In conjunction with pole day qualifying, a handful of 6/8-cylinder cars and trucks took to the asphalt at Sundance Vacations Speedway Saturday for round no. 3 of the Mountain Madness Enduro Series. When it was all said and done, Rob McCormick found himself a lap ahead of the competition, as he took the checkered flag for his first enduro win of the season.
Sam Morgan led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 100-lap event and quickly surrendered the lead to Chris Rosely. Shortly after, Mark Martini took command and was pursued by John Vullo, Jr, Tom Szoke and Ed Brown, Jr.
From the ninth starting position, Rob McCormick moved into the race lead on lap 4.
While setting a torrid pace, McCormick continued to hold the point at halfway, followed by Brown, TJ Kapish, Greg Harris and Mike Parisi.
Uncontested throughout, McCormick lapped the second place driver on lap 72 and continued to take the checkers for his first win of the season. Brown was forced to settle for second, with Kapish, Harris and Parisi in tow.
Time trials for Sunday’s season opener were also held on Saturday. Picking up where he left off last season, Kyle Ebersole ran the fastest Modified time, as did Chip Wanamaker in the Street Stocks and Dave Freundt in the FWD division. The fast timers will “roll the dice” prior to the features on Sunday to determine the number of positions that will be inverted for the starting lineup.

Hometown Heroes Babb & Feger Outduel Outlaws On Opening Night Of Illini 100 At Farmer City Raceway
FARMER CITY, IL - April 9, 2010 - Shannon Babb and Jason Feger proved they're ready to keep the Illini 100 trophy in the Land of Lincoln.
The two central Illinois hotshoes played starring roles during Friday night's qualifying program for the biggest and richest dirt Late Model event in the state of Illinois, winning heat races to position themselves well to chase the race's $20,000 top prize on Saturday night at Farmer City Raceway.
"I'd really like to win this thing," said Moweaqua's Babb, who has finishes of second and fifth in the two previous runnings of the blockbuster World of Outlaws Late Model Series at the quarter-mile oval. "You couldn't ask for anything more exciting than winning a real big show at a track you grew up racing at."
After turning the fastest lap of the 50-car time-trial session at 13.009 seconds, Babb, 36, held off 2008 Illini 100 winner Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., to win the first of four 15-lap heat races. Babb's victory margin of less than a half car-length almost exactly matched the narrow distance he lost the inaugural Illini 100 to Moyer.
"I was a little free on exit (from the turns)," said Babb, who drove the Sheltra Construction Rocket No. 18. "Billy was a little bit better, but he was smart enough not to push the issue because he knew we would both be in the (A-Main) redraw."
Feger, 31, of Bloomington ran his heart out to win the evening's third heat in his one-race-old Pierce Chassis machine. The defending DIRTcar UMP Late Model national champion overtook WoO LMS regular Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., for the lead on lap 10 and never looked back.
"I got a good run, drove it in hard (entering turn one) and it stuck," said Feger, who finished eighth in last year's Illini 100. "I think we have a real good car, but you don't know what can happen in 100 laps. We'll give it our best shot tomorrow."
Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wis., and Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., also won heat races. They will join Babb, Feger and the four runner-up finishers in the heats - Moyer, Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, defending WoO LMS champion Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., and Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis. - in a redraw for the top-eight starting positions in the Illini 100 on Saturday night.
Richards moved forward from the fifth starting spot to transfer through the stacked third heat, which included four former WoO LMS titlists. Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., also qualified by finishing fourth, while Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., fell one spot short and Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., finished ninth after pitting on lap one to replace a right-rear shock that had come loose on his car.
Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., suffered the night's biggest heartbreak when he spun between turns one and two while holding third place on lap 13 of the second heat. His involvement in an original-start tangle bent his car's left-rear sheet and ultimately ripped a line of tread off his left-rear, leaving him to battle an ill-handling mount.
With a sparkling spring forecast calling for clear skies and a high temperature reaching 70, a huge crowd is expected to pack the fairgrounds track for Saturday night's Illini 100. The program, which kicks off at 6 p.m., includes two B-Mains, a 25-lap Non-Qualifiers' Race and the Illini 100 plus regular shows for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds and Pro Late Models.
More info on the Illini 100 is available by logging on to www.farmercityraceway.net or calling 309-634-5601.

BOBBY VARIN RACING NEWS
Sharon Springs, NY- Fonda Modified Champion Bobby Varin Set For Ice Jam This Weekend
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Five time Fonda Speedway Modified Champion Bobby Varin and his team have the new racing equipment buttoned down and ready to go for this coming weekend as the famous Fonda Speedway opens it's gates for the 59th time on Saturday April 10th. While this is a non points event, Varin will be looking to open the season at Fonda on a successful note. Last season at the opener Varin ran second to winner Pat Ward, even though Varin tracked him down late in the race but ran out of laps to mount a final challenge. Varin has captured two opening events in the past, the first coming in 2001 and again in 2005 and would like nothing better than to get into the win column at Fonda early. The annual Ice Jam at Fonda will find a $4,000.00 paycheck awaiting the victor in the winner's circle at the end of 40-laps. The following week on Saturday April 17th will find the Varin team in defense of the Fonda track title Bobby captured for the fifth time in 2009. The Sunday action on April 18th will kick in at the Utica Rome Speedway where Varin is hoping to get out of the blocks early to enable him a strong opportunity at dethroning defending track champion Pat Ward. The Utica Rome event will kick off the "Thunder on the Thruway" series between Fonda and Utica Rome and will offer a $5,000.00 opening night prize for the winner of the 50-lap feature event.
Varin and the team made the long tow to Big Diamond Raceway last Friday for the rained out event at the speedway. With four of the qualified cars opting not to return to the speedway, Varin was able to start from 14th position instead of the 18th starting spot he was scheduled for. An over zealous field of racers and rough track conditions brought about many cautions and damaged racing equipment but Varin soldiered on and on three separate toccasions had to go to the rear of the field and work his way back up through the field that seemingly dwindled by the lap. Duane Howard captured the win over Ryan Godown with Billy Pauch Jr in third, Jimmy Horton fourth and Varin completing the top five. Varin was behind the wheel of the Ken Saya owned Commercial Roofing number 10 machine for the Big Diamond event.
Varin is hoping for the same kind of success in the 2010 season that he enjoyed in 2009 as he captured fifteen wins at three different speedways in 2009 and along the way captured his fifth Fonda Speedway Modified title in the process. Varin has some exceptional racing equipment to choose from in 2010 as the Commercial Roofing Team is well noted for their great race car program and the team has been a solid contender every time Varin has steered the equipment. Varin, who has a tremendous schedule ahead of him in 2010, will utilize the Commercial Roofing machine for select dates during the mid-week portions and open dates of the 2010 season that will include but not defined to Super Dirt Series clashes, Roc Events and events the very busy Varin can schedule in. The primary race machine for the Varin Team will be the famous numbered 00 machines owned by Dave Cruickshank and Dover Brake fam and new cars have been readied in the off-season for Varin to defend his track title at Fonda Speedway and the team will also go after the Utica Rome championship, a title that has eluded Varin in the past. Varin will also have the services of the Andy Romano/Marv Pedrick owned number 97 Bicknell race car for scheduled action at the Glen Ridge Speedway on Friday evenings.
The 2009 racing season for the Varin Racing Team was a great one as New York State racing superstar captured his fifth track championship at the Fonda Speedway recently to go along with the fifteen feature wins he scored during the 2009 racing campaign. Varin was third in the final Utica Rome points battle and was fourth in the final points at the Glen Ridge Motorsports Park. Bobby's son Danny countered with a 7th in points at Fonda and an 8th place finish at Utica Rome in his sophomore season in the Modifieds. The Varin team is hoping for more of the same success when the 2010 racing season begins at Fonda and Utica Rome. The car owner for the Varin Team is the legendary Dave Cruickshank and the hard working team is headed up by Crew Chief John Bakuzonis, and crew members Dave Cross, Jeff Preston, Tyler Preston, Bucky Loucks and Garret Sagatis. With additional cars in the stable for Varin with the Commercial Roofing entry and the Romano/Pedrick machine, the 2010 season will be chock full of racing from start to finish.
The Varin Family credits much of their success to their fine group of sponsors who continue to support their racing efforts. Dover Brake, Joe Bertothy Racing, JSB Fabrications, Land Designs, Supply Wagon Rentals, Rite Aid, Corigliano Towing, Leslie Home Improvement, GA Motorsports Media and Boys Club of America have all been solid in their support of the Varin racing efforts and encourage the racing community to support all of these fine sponsors whenever they have the capacity to do so. Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank their their loyal fan base for the strong support offered during the 2009 racing season and look for continued support into the 2010 racing season and beyond. More updates will follow shortly for the Varin Racing team efforts. Follow the success of the 00 and 18v Varin Racing Team at their websites with all of the latest updates and information at: www.bobbyvarin.com or www.dannyvarin.com

JUSTIN ALLGAIER TAKES THE CHECKERED FLAG AT RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY’S “SIGNATURE BUBBA BURGER®” MINI-CONTEST AT KROGER
Richmond, VA (April 8, 2010) – BUBBA burgers® and condiments were flying off the grills yesterday at Kroger on Mechanicsville Turnpike, as NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers Justin Allgaier and Jason Leffler bumped and banged their way around grills with local media celebrities Matt DiNardo (WRIC-TV8 meteorologist), Amanda Meadows (WTVR traffic reporter) and “Sludge” (Y101 radio host), to see who could build the best “Signature BUBBA burger®.”
The contestants were given just 15 minutes to run in to the local Kroger and purchase their signature toppings. They then returned to the grills, run by Americrown Catering chefs, Kendall and Tony, and requested the BUBBA burger® of their choice (Original, Sweet Onion or Turkey). Once the burgers were done, the contestants built three burgers for the judging panel, consisting of Richmond International Raceway president Doug Fritz, Richmond.com editor Karri Peifer and Marketing Coordinator for BUBBA burger® Jamie Sakin.
After presenting their “Signature BUBBA burgers®” to the judges, the panel voted for a tie between Allgaier and Meadows. It was left up to the crowd of fans gathered for the event to vote on the best presentation and “sounding” burger. In the end, Allgaier, who is currently third in the NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings, took the checkered flag and was awarded bragging rights.
The recipes, which showed the personality of each contestant, are listed below:
Leffler went with a California style cheeseburger, opting for the Original BUBBA burger®, which included havarti cheese, thousand island dressing and shredded lettuce on a standard bun.
Allgaier agreed that a simple cheeseburger is best, building his burger with two Original BUBBA burgers®, Swiss cheese, A-1 steak sauce and crushed saltines on a thin wheat bun.
DiNardo tapped into his Italian side, building an eggplant parmesan burger. He used the Original BUBBA burger®, topped with grilled eggplant brushed with olive oil and a little tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella on a garlic grilled gourmet roll with parsley.
Meadows thought about the warm temperatures and went for a Hawaiian style burger. She used the Sweet Onion BUBBA burger®, topped with hot and spicy BBQ sauce, pineapple, red onion and Swiss cheese on a Hawaiian roll.
“Sludge” took the Sweet Onion BUBBA burger® to a new level, topping it with cheddar mashed potatoes, green chilies, BBQ sauce, muenster cheese, grilled bacon and onion in a hollowed out Focaccia loaf.
In addition to today’s contest, all of the NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers who will be competing in the BUBBA burger 250 at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night, April 30, have been invited to submit their Signature BUBBA burger® combination. All submissions will be featured on www.rir.com for fans to vote on their favorite “Signature BUBBA burger®.”
Voting ends Monday, April 26. The top five vote-getters will be invited to participate in a final “Signature BUBBA burger®” Challenge at Richmond International Raceway on April 30. The burgers will be showcased for a panel of judges to taste and to determine the winner. The champion burger and creator will be recognized during the BUBBA burger 250 pre-race ceremonies and the driver’s team will win a BUBBA burger® lunch at their race shop.
The BUBBA burger® has become America’s #1 selling branded frozen burger. The BUBBA burger® is designed to be cooked frozen. So whether you choose to grill it or cook them in a skillet they are “Simply Delicious.” Find them in your local grocer’s freezer! And remember, Bubba says, “You’ll Never Bite A Burger Better Than A Bubba!” For more information on BUBBA burger®, please visit www.bubba-burger.com or The Official BUBBA burger Fan Page on Facebook®.

WILLMAN AND GODOWN MAY BE FAN FAVORITES FOR WIN IN 40-LAP NASCAR MODIFIED FEATURE AT GRANDVIEW
BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 8, 2010 . . . In the BPG Racing Pick 3 Contest which offers fans at Grandview Speedway a chance to win cash for picking the top three finishers in the NASCAR 358 Modified feature race no one picked John Willman to win last Saturday.
This Saturday night fans will probably make John Willman one of the fan favorites in the Pick 3 contest selections. Last Saturday night he was able to hold off Duane Howard, a consistent top performer in the NASCAR 358 Modifieds to win the 30-lap open night feature. It was just his third career victory and his first in a number of years.
With $4,000 waiting for the winner in the 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series 358 Modified feature race on Saturday (April 10) Willman will go off as a fan favorite to win as long as he can qualify for the 29-car starting field.
Last Saturday 55 Modifieds tried to qualify with 26 racers ending up as spectators. There should be that many if not more trying for a starting spot in the rich classic.
Many feel that Ryan Godown would have been tough to beat if he had not run into tire problems. He had a very comfortable lead when he was forced to the pits with a flat tire about midway in the main event. Godown will be a big fan favorite as a result of his strong effort.
There will be plenty of competition for Willman and Godown including Howard, eight time Modified champion Jeff Strunk, Craig VonDohren, Billy Pauch Jr., Doug Manmiller, Keith Hoffman, Mike Gular, Terry Meitzler, Jason Hamilton and a host of others.
The NASCAR Late Models will be the second part of this exciting doubleheader show set to start at 7 p.m. Mike Kellner, open night winner, will be looking for his second win in a row.
Adult admission for the special April 10 doubleheader is $20, kids 6-11 pay $5 and under 6 are admitted FREE. There is always FREE parking on the speedway grounds.
Sunday, April 11, 2 p.m. the NEETS Enduro competitors will be in action along with the open thingypit SpeedSTRs. Jeff Strunk will be part of the SpeedSTR action.
Grandview Speedway is located at 43 Passmore Road, just off Route 100, in Bechtelsville, PA, 10 miles north of Pottstown. For information telephone 610.754.7688 or check in at www.grandviewspeedway.com.

World of Outlaws Late Model Series News & Notes: Previewing The 'Illini 100' On April 9-10 At Farmer City Raceway
FARMER CITY, IL - April 7, 2010 -
HOMETOWN BOY: Jason Feger wants to keep the Illini 100 trophy where it belongs – in the Land of Lincoln.
The Bloomington, Ill., resident is confident that he can write that storyline for his homestate's biggest and richest dirt Late Model event, a 100-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series spectacular scheduled for this Friday and Saturday (April 9-10) at Farmer City Raceway.
"It would just be awesome to pick up that $20,000 (first-place) check in front of the home crowd," said Feger, who has turned many laps around the demanding quarter-mile clay oval during his career. "All of my family and friends will be there with their 'Feger' shirts on so I'd love to give them something to cheer about. We'll have a great party in the pits if we can pull it off."
Coming off a career season in 2009 that saw him win 23 features and his first-ever DIRTcar UMP Late Model national championship, Feger, 31, believes this weekend's third annual edition of the Illini 100 represents his best chance yet at a major resume-building victory. He has more experience in long-distance races and feels much sharper than the driver who finished a solid eighth in last year's event.
"We ended up eighth last year, but we broke a lift-bar (under the front nosepiece) about halfway through and that definitely affected my handling for the rest of the race," said Feger, who failed to make the starting grid for the inaugural Illini 100 in 2008 but did win the Non-Qualifiers Race as a consolation prize. "I think we had a car that could've run in the top five if the lift-bar wouldn't have been getting caught in the (car's) frame when I went through the turns, so I know we can run up front.
"Now we'll be going into this weekend with even more knowledge from all the racing we did last year and already this year (in Georgia and Florida this February), so I don't see why we can't win the race. I think the field for this year's race is going to be the toughest yet, but if we make the right decisions and our car stays together we'll have a shot."
Feger proved last year that he can get the job done on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, topping the national tour's roster of superstar drivers for his first career series win at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wis. Now he'd like to add a second triumph on more familiar turf.
"I don't think there could be anything better than having an Illinois driver win the Illini 100," said Feger, who will run a fresh Pierce Chassis car this weekend after driving the machine to victory in its debut outing last Saturday night at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway. "I'd love to be that guy."
NAIL-BITERS: Two years. Two dramatic races. Is there another one in for Saturday night's Illini 100?
All the drivers involved in the memorable endings of the past two seasons will be in action this weekend, including three-time WoO LMS champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who won the hold-your-breath inaugural Illini 100 in 2008.
Moyer started third in that event but didn't grab the lead until lap 99 when he slipped by Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., who was forced to start at the rear of the field because he changed a tire after presenting his car for the starting lineup. Babb led laps 55-72, 74-84 and 86-98 – and came up less a car's length short of leading the last circuit as well.
WoO LMS regular Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., earned his only victory on the 2009 tour in last year's Illini 100. A quiet 11th-place finisher in the inaugural event, Clanton started from the pole position last year but spent almost the entire distance chasing leader Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, finally sneaking underneath Birky to assume command on lap 94.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: There has not been a repeat winner over the first six A-Mains of the 2010 WoO LMS schedule – and if another new driver emerges victorious in the Illini 100, the tour's modern-era (2004-present) record for most different winners to start a season will be matched. In 2004 the first repeat winner came in the eighth feature.
What's more, all six winners this season are drivers who plan to follow the entire WoO LMS. The only other season with a longer season-opening winning streak by tour regulars was 2005, when Outlaws captured the first 11 A-Mains.
HE'S O.K.: Coming into the Illini 100 as the season's most recent WoO LMS winner is Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., who broke out of an early-season funk with his victory on March 27 at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas.
"I told Tim (Logan, his crew chief) when we went to Texas, 'We're close – we're not perfect yet, but we're close,'" said Francis, who entered the March 26-27 doubleheader in the Lone Star State mired in ninth in the points standings with just one top-five finish in four starts. "Then we ran so bad at Battleground (Speedway to kick off the Texas Two-Step weekend) I didn't know what to think, but we came back (at Lone Star) and finally got it all put together. Now I think we might have something."
With Francis back fielding his own equipment this season after spending 2008-2009 driving for Maryland's Dale Beitler, this weekend will mark his first Illini 100 appearance in his familiar No. 15. He was a contender in both previous 100s, finishing third in 2008 (he led laps 51-54 and 73) and running fifth in last year's edition until he tumbled to 15th in the final rundown because a broke left-rear tracking rod caused him to limp around the track at reduced speed for the final circuits.
HE'S BACK: As Tim McCreadie embarks on his first season as a WoO LMS regular since he won the championship in 2006, he's ready to make his first start at Farmer City since 2008.
Watertown, N.Y.'s McCreadie, who turns 36 on April 12, was unable to enter last year's Illini 100 because he was sidelined by the back injury he suffered in January during the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. Currently sitting second in the WoO LMS points standings after six events but without a win, he hopes to flash the speed he showed in his below-the-radar charge from the 20th starting spot to a fourth-place finish in the '08 event.
OUTLAWS IN THE ILLINI: The Illini 100 finishes for the other 2010 WoO LMS travelers not already listed in this release: Josh Richards (sixth in '08, third in '09); Rick Eckert (seventh, 10th); Darrell Lanigan (eighth, seventh); Shane Clanton (11th, first); Chub Frank (12th, ninth); Clint Smith (14th, 12th); Tim Fuller (17th, 11th); Brady Smith (21st, 14th); Russell King (20th in '09); Brent Robinson (DNQ in '09); and Rookie of the Year candidate Jill George (DNF both years), who expects to be back in action after missing the tour's last event at Lone Star Speedway because she suffered a deep cut on her right arm in a wild flip into the turn-three catch fence the previous night at Battleground.
WoO LMS rookie sensation Austin Hubbard, an 18-year-old who already has a victory (and the tour's craziest post-race celebration) to his credit this season, will make his first career start at Farmer City.
TOUGH COMPETITION: Feger is one of many UMP Late Model standouts hailing from Illinois who will challenge the Outlaws. He'll be joined by such racers as former WoO LMS regular Shannon Babb (second in '08 Illini 100, fifth in '09); three-time UMP Summer Nationals champion Dennis Erb Jr. (16th, 21st); Steve Sheppard Jr. (ninth, DNQ; Kevin Weaver (22nd, won Non-Qualifiers' Race); Brian Shirley (19th, DNQ); Eric Smith (DNQ, 18th); Scott Bull (DNQ, 24th); Ryan Unzicker (DNQ, 25th); Daren Friedman (DNQ, DNQ); and Brandon Sheppard (DNQ, DNQ).
Excluding Babb because he's been an Outlaw regular, the best finish by an Illinois driver in the Illini 100 was a fifth in 2008 by Wes Steidinger, who no longer races regularly. Richie Hedrick, meanwhile, scored a sixth-place finish last year.
The list of talented outsiders expected includes Moyer, Birkhofer, Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis. (fourth place finisher last year), Jeep VanWormer of Pinconning, Mich. (13th in '08 is his best), Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wis., Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., Steve Casebolt of Richmond, Ind.
ILLINI 100 EVENT INFORMATION: An open practice from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thurs., April 8, kicks off the Illini 100 weekend.
On Friday night, April 9, time trials and heat races will be contested for the Illini 100 along with a regular show for Farmer City’s DIRTcar UMP Modified and Hornet divisions. The finale on Saturday night, April 10, will include full shows for the UMP Modifieds and Pro Late Models plus the Illini 100 B-Mains, a 25-lap Non-Qualifiers’ Race and the 100-lap headliner.
Gates will be open through the morning and early afternoon on both Friday and Saturday, but the pits, camping area and stands will be cleared at 3 p.m. each day and then officially reopened. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Ticket prices for adults are $15 (Friday) and $30 (Saturday), with tickets for children (ages 6-12) priced at $5 (Friday) and $15 (Saturday). Kids 5-and-under will be admitted free.
Pit passes are $30 on Friday and $40 on Saturday or $60 for a two-day combo. Pit passes for kids (ages 4-11) are $15 on Friday, $20 on Saturday or $30 for a two-day pass.
