Knopp and Kreitz Victorious at SSP’s Opening Weekend on Saturday and Sunday
Newberrytown, PA (April 11, 2010) – On Saturday night, April 10, Chris Knopp won the 20-lap Late Model feature on Saturday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Then on Sunday night, Don Kreitz won a thrilling 25-lap Sprint Car feature event over Tyler Walker.
On Saturday, Chris Knopp wired the field to win his first Late Model feature event of the season. Knopp, a former Sprint Car driver and now SSP regular, grabbed the lead after a first lap 15 car pileup shook up the starting lineup. Charles Potts came to the finish in second, followed by Larry Baer, Kyle Saylor and Bob Minnich. Randy Christine and Saylor were the heat race winners.
Doug Bennett started the season off on the right foot by winning the Street Stock main event over a hard charging Scott Thunberg. Thunberg was glued to Bennett’s bumper the entire race, but was unable to make the winning pass and had to settle for second. Sam Rial finished third in his Street Stock debut with Brian Hauenstein and Brett Pickel rounding out the top five.
Travis Horan scored the victory in the first XSC Elite feature event over Patrick McClane and Andrew Frye. Jeff Keefer and Jason Failor completed the top five.
Donnie and Ray Broderick led the Xtreme Stock Car field to the finish with Donnie besting his father Ray at the end for the victory. Tim Hahn finished third with Matt Adams and Jason Failor rounding out the top five.
Matt Watkins picked up the feature win in the visiting PA Sprint Series main event over Mike Wagner II and Todd Spangler.
On Sunday night, practice paid off for Don Kreitz in the 25-lap Sprint Car Spring Classic main event. Kreitz participated in the last bi-weekly Wednesday night Test & Tune to dial in his 800+ horsepower vehicle to the track. Kreitz led from start-to-finish to capture the main event for the Super Sprint Cars over Tyler Walker. Walker closed in on Kreitz’s rear bumper many times during the race as the two diced their way through lapped traffic, but Kreitz’s flawless drive did not leave any openings for Walker. Polesitter Greg Hodnett dropped back at the start but recovered to finish third ahead of rim-rider Lance Dewease and Fred Rahmer.
Greg Hodnett defeated Don Kreitz in the “King of the Hill” match races to earn the pole position for the feature event. Alan Krimes, Daryn Pittman and Hodnett won their respective heat races.
In the wingless ARDC Midget feature event, Dusty Heistand grabbed the early lead until Steve Buckwalter took command on lap 9. Buckwalter extended a sizeable lead over the field. On the final circuit, a mechanical failure caused Buckwalter’s vehicle to stumble, handing the lead to Billy Pauch Jr. who crossed the finish line for the win. Drew Heistand finished second followed by Steve Lenig, Dusty Heistand and Brett Arndt. Buckwalter nursed his car home to an eighth place finish.
Buckwalter did return in the make-up feature event to dominate the race for the victory.
Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midget, kart and Adult Speedcar racing action.
Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP on Saturday night, April 17 with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, XSC Elite, PENNMAR Vintage Cars and Mini Vans.
Saturday will also be the first “Hometown Heroes” night of the season featuring the towns of Manchester, Mount Wolf and York Haven. Before the races begin, the drivers from those hometowns will have the opportunity to display their cars and meet the fans at the front gate of the speedway. The drivers will also be interviewed during the night’s racing program. Also, all fans entering the speedway from that driver’s hometown being honored will be admitted FREE to the grandstands by showing proper photo identification and filling out an information card at the ticket booth.

“37 Late Models, and a Wild Crash Highlight Hagerstown on Saturday”
Last Saturday night was the first of four 2010 appearances of Doug Timmons “Three State Flyers” series events at Maryland’s Hagerstown speedway. Thirty-seven late models and 18 pure stocks lined the Hagerstown pit area under cool but clear weather conditions. Track conditions were absolutely perfect with multiple grooves of racing, even though the show was delayed nearly a half-hour as track prep crews readied the surface.
York Haven Pa.’s Jason Covert would go on to totally dominate the event leading all thirty-five laps, but the race was highlighted with a spectacular crash on the second lap of the feature. Rusty Sites and Mike Knight were battling hard for second and third in the feature when they touched entering the third turn. Sites MasterSbilt no.3S slammed head-on into the third turn barrier taking Knight with him. The impact was so severe, the entire left side of Sites machine, including the front and rear tires were torn clean from the machine. Adding insult to injury, Jamie Lathroum, who won the TSF event at Williams Grove (PA) on Friday night slammed the crippled race of Sites. Even with the severity of the crash all drivers were able to walk away from the incident. Here’s some notes from the show-
* Rochester Mills Pa.’s Greg Satterlee made the long tow to race Friday and Saturday with the TSF series over the weekend. Satterlee would pace ninth at Williams Grove on Friday night and would then drive from his fourteenth starting spot on Saturday at Hagerstown to collect a solid third in the feature wheeling his family owned Rocket no.22.
* Noticeably absent from the show was Selinsgrove Pa.’s Jim Yoder. The one-time 2009 LM winner at Hagerstown and third place point man, opted to skip the show with his Rocket no.27. However, Yoder was at Selinsgrove (PA) speedway on Saturday where he would finish second to race winner Jeff Rine.
* Winchester Va.’s Ronnie DeHaven Jr., Who won the opener at Winchester speedway three weeks ago, ran quite well at Hagerstown with his Bob Pierce race cars no.19. He would come all the way from his 18th starting spot to take eighth at the finish.
* With 37 cars in the pit’s the DNQ list was quite impressive as Dan Stone, Andy Anderson and Devin Freise, just to name a few, missed the cut for the feature.
* Hagerstown Md.’s Alan Sagi was at the controls of Scott LeBarrons’s back-up GRT no.8A for the weekend’s action. Sagi ran well at Williams Grove taking 8th in the feature but his luck at Hagerstown was not very good as he did not qualify for the feature. Sagi stated this was just a weekend deal with LeBarron as his normal Saturday night ride, the John Chamberlain Rocket no.81, was still being repaired from a violent crash at Hagerstown the week prior.
* Hampstead Md.’s Al Shawver Jr. earned hard charger honors in the 35-lap event. He drove his self-owned Rocket no.215 from the 23rd starting spot to claim 9th at the finish. Shawver was a one-time LM winner at the track in 09’.
* Congrats to Sykesville Md.’s Glenn Elliott as he would collect his first-ever limited late model feature win at the Winchester Speedway on Saturday night, steering his MasterSbilt no.5. Elliott, a three time LMS winner at Hagerstown in 09’, was also the runner-up in the LMS feature at Hagerstown the week prior.
* Gettysburg Pa.’s Jeremy Miller had his self-owned MasterSbilt no.1M running quite well at Hagerstown on Saturday. Miller lined up ninth for the feature and was racing in the top-five until something let loose under the hood of his machine sending him to the pits with a 16th place feature finish.
* Seaford Delaware’s Ricky Elliott made the weekend trip north with his Barry Wright race cars no.88. Elliott qualified for both races taking 14th at Williams Grove and 11th at Hagerstown.
* Chambersburg Pa.’s Randy Burkholder had his TSF top-10 streak broken over the weekend. In 2009 Burkholder was the only driver to have finished in the top-10 in every TSF event on the schedule. Piloting his family owned Rocket no.77, Burkholder would take a 21st at Williams Grove and 15th at Hagerstown on Saturday.

place respectively. Also on lap 3, Mike Barone drew a caution for flat
right tire. On the restart, Hendrickson chose the outside lane and
held onto his lead. Behind him, positions were changing in the top
five as Brian Kressley motored up to fourth with Rick Laubach driving
into fifth from his twelfth starting spot. By lap 8, Hendrickson had a
half straightway lead on the field. A spin by Brett Ballard on lap 11
evaporated Hendrickson’s comfortable lead. When action resumed, the
top three kept their places but Kressley lost a few spots as Laubach
took over fourth place and Billy Pauch, Sr. maneuvered into fifth.
With Hendrickson still unchallenged, a battle ensued between James and
Laubach for several laps before Laubach took over third on lap 17.
Laubach began to close in on Harrell and eventually took over the
runner-up position on lap 21. Two tours later, Hendrickson entered lap
traffic and Laubach began to reel in the leader. After successfully
driving past slower cars, Hendrickson crossed the finish line first
for his forty-third career win at Bridgeport. Laubach came home in
second with third place going to Harrell. Pauch, Sr. squeezed by James
in the final laps to get fourth place. Qualifying events were won by
Laubach, Hendrickson and Pauch, Sr.
In the 25-lap Rislone URC Sprint feature, pole sitter Davey Sammons
bolted out to the lead with Chris Coyle and Curt Michael in tow.
Michael worked his way by Coyle on lap 3 and Trevor Lewis put Coyle
back another place on the next circuit. By lap 5, Sammons began to lap
cars and 2009 URC Sprint Champion JJ Grasso climbed into fifth after
starting in tenth place. On lap 8, the red lights illuminated the
smooth racetrack as Coyle’s car collided with a slow moving Art Leidl
and caused a spectacular flip by Coyle in turn two. When the green
flag waved again, Sammons remained on the point. On lap 11, Michael
and Lewis began a multi-lap tussle with Lewis finally gaining the
position on lap 15 just before the yellow flag waved for the stopped
sprinter of Nick Schlauch, Jr. Sammons fought back a fierce challenge
by Lewis on the restart to preserve his lead. Behind the top two,
Grasso crept by Michael to gain third place on lap 16. With five laps
to go, the final caution of the event occurred for a slow moving Scott
Pursell. On the restart, Lewis swung by Sammons in turn two to grab
the lead. On the next lap, Sammons and Grasso came together briefly on
the backstretch. The encounter sent Grasso scooting through the
infield and the loss of one position after returning to the speedway
between turns three and four. Lewis retained his lead in the final
laps to gain his seventeenth career win in URC Sprint Car competition.
Sammons crossed the finish line in second with Michael in third and
Grasso fourth. Kevin Nouse came home in fifth place. Sammons, Coyle,
and Lewis were victors in the heat races. Schlauch, Jr. won the
consolation race.
Larry Lippincott took the lead on lap 13 and claimed the win in the
20-lap Crate Modified feature. Eric Kormann led the majority of laps
before the eleventh place starting Lippincott took over the lead. At
the finish line, Kormann was second followed by Neal Williams, Dan
Mazy and John Micek. Mike Cogdill, Kormann, and Chuck Hopkins each
picked up a heat race win. Following the race, Lippincott’s motor was
found to have no track seals on it. After a technical inspection and
proper sealing, Lippincott’s third career win at Bridgeport Speedway
was upheld.

Earl Paules Snags Modified Event at Sundance Vacations Speedway
By: Gene Ostrowski
April 11, 2010
St. Johns, Pa- As the old saying goes, ‘the fastest car doesn’t always win the race’. That was definitely the case Sunday at Sundance Vacations Speedway when Earl Paules of Palmerton walked away as the winner in the Modified feature event after the fastest car, Kyle Ebersole crashed out of the event. Always a nail biter to the finish, Joe Barbush of Drums edged out Richie DiMarco to take the Street Stock verdict and Bill Verwys, Jr. of Stroudsburg overtook his brother Pete to notch the 4-cyl. FWD victory. Matt Janisch took no mercy on the Wingless Micro Sprint field and drove away in a dominating performance.
Kyle Ebersole ran the quickest lap during time trials on Saturday and had to roll the dice, which decided the invert for the feature lineup. Ebersole rolled a nine, which put Jimmy Zacharias on the pole for the 40-lap main event.
Zacharias led the opening lap over Brian DeFebo, Andy Walko, Earl Paules and Rusty Smith before the yellow flag waved for a pair of lap four cautions. Green flag racing resumed and Walko overtook Zacharias for the race lead.
Another pair of yellows came next when Pete Brittain encountered problems and slowed on the speedway and another followed when Dave Schneider spun in turn three.
The lap seven restart gave DeFebo the opportunity that he needed, and he overtook Walko for the lead on lap eight.
Larry Fisher started the race in seventh and quickly cracked the top five, as he ran behind DeFebo as the runner up on lap 11, with Walko, Ebersole and Paules in tow.
It was evident that DeFebo didn’t have the quickest car mid race, yet the three time Modified champion continued to hold off his competition. That changed when Ebersole and Paules overtook Walko for second and third with ten laps remaining.
Both Ebersole and Fisher appeared to be driving rockets and began to challenge for the lead. Paules was right in the mix as well, sitting in fourth. With only five laps remaining and while trying to block the two behind him off of turn 2, the three cars tangled. When it was all said and done, both Fisher and DeFebo were forced to restart from the rear off the field, while Ebersole’s car was delivered back to the pit area by two tow trucks.
Paules inherited the race lead and never looked back as he took the opening day victory over Walko. Todd Baer pitted earlier in the event and drove toward the front to finish third, followed by Darren Scherer and Nick Pecko.
Pete Brittain won the consi.
Chip Wanamaker ran the fastest Street Stock qualifying lap on Saturday and the rolled a four for the invert, which put Scott Meckes on the pole for the 25-lap Street Stock feature. Meckes held the lead for two circuits before Richie DiMarco overtook him.
The first of two cautions flew on lap eight when Jim Yamelski received a flat tire. Green flag racing resumed and Joe Barbush got by Meckes for the runner up spot.
Chip Wanamaker moved to third following a lap 11 restart and Steve Shultz worked into fifth, just behind Meckes.
It appeared that Barbush had a faster car, yet drove patiently behind the leader. Barbush began to set up a pass with two laps remaining and drover up alongside DiMarco on the white flag lap.
Not knowing what to expect through the final two corners, the two drivers crossed the finish line side-by-side and Barbush came out with the victory. DiMarco finished a very close second, followed by Wanamaker, Meckes and Shultz.
Dave Freundt ran the quickest 4 cyl. FWD lap on Saturday and rolled a three for the field invert in the 20-lap main. Eric Banashefski started on the pole with Mike Kline in tow. Following a quick caution, Kline attempted to overtake the leader in turn three and spun out, which forced him to join the rear of the field for the restart. Freundt took the race lead.
Bill Verwys, Jr. moved to the second spot and began to put pressure on the leader. Verwys tagged Freundt in turns one and two, which brought out a lap four yellow. Both drivers joined the back of the field and Robert Fink became the new race leader.
The restart got ugly for Freundt when both he and Joe Katona crashed while coming out of turn 4. Both drivers were forced to retire with significant damage to their race cars.
Fink led at halfway, followed by Pete Verwys, Banashefski, Nikki Sage and Kline, yet there was a new leader on the following lap when racing contact between the top two brought out a lap 11 yellow.
P. Verwys continued out front and then the yellow waved for the final time when Kline and Sager tangled in turns three and four. The turn of events put Banashefski back into second, followed by B. Verwys.
B. Verwys overtook Banashefski for second and then set his sights on his brother, Pete. P. Verwys attempted to block B. Verwys when the duo headed down the backstretch on the final lap. The two touched and P. Verwys headed toward the infield. He drove back on to the surface to challenge for the lead.
The two crossed the strip side-by-side with Bill taking the victory over Pete. Banashefski held on to finish third, followed by Harry O’Neill and Fink.
A handful of Wingless Micro Sprints came out to the speedway for a 20-lap feature. Mainly run on dirt through out the area, the wingless cars have several shows scheduled at the speedway this season.
Matt Janisch took the race lead early and was uncontested, as he cruised to the victory over Ed Wilberg and Mark Janisch.
The Wingless Micro Sprints will be back in action on Sunday, April 18.

YOUTH PREVAILS AS JORDAN WATSON TAKES DELAWARE OPENER
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE (4/10/10) – Sunday night’s Delmar Night opener at the Delaware International Speedway had more twists and turns than a good mystery novel, especially in the 25 lap NAPA Big Block Modified feature. The outcome boiled down to a classic battle between third year 21 year old driver, Jordan Watson and the modified legend Kenny Brightbill. When the checkered flag flew it was youth that prevailed as Watson posted his second career win in the division.
Drivers started heads up from their qualifying heats with Brightbill on the pole in the Keith Coulbourne No. 55 and defending track champion H.J. Bunting and Jordan Watson in the second row of the Delaware start.
The drama started at the drop of the green as the caution quickly flew and a “no start” was called with Bunting being sent to the rear for the jump. This put former two time champion, Jamie Mills on the outside of the second row when the field got the green.
Brightbill led the first lap but Mills had the quicker car and was pulling away by lap two with Brightbill and Watson in tow. All eyes were on Bunting who by a lap seven was running eighth after a yellow for fourth place runner, Bobby Watkins who slowed to a stop.
Mills quickly reopened his advantage with Watson taking second from Brightbill on lap nine. Bunting was just outside of the top five and still charging taking fifth on lap ten.
Brad Trice, who is competing in his first full season in the Big Blocks was turning in a great run in fourth but was dropped to fifth by Bunting at the halfway sign. At that point Mills had a full four second lead over Watson and Brightbill.
By lap 16 Mills had built that lead to almost six seconds when he had to check up in lapped traffic and made a long slow sideway slide to a stop in the first turn bringing out the final yellow.
Watson was the new leader with Brightbill and Bunting directly behind. While Mills made a blitz from the rear, Brightbill put on a challenge pulling even with Watson on several occasions in the first turn. Watson was the quicker of the two through three and four and was able to hold off the challenges in the final laps to post the win in his Courtland Manor/Reagan Watson Auction/Bicknell/Larkin.
“We kind of got lucky. Jamie had a little bit of a problem in lapped traffic there. We were a second place car. We made it all work out,” smiled Watson. Brightbill ended his debut with Keith Coulbourne with a solid second and Trice took advantage of a slip by Bunting to finish in third. Mills ran out of time and ended his charge back to the front in fifth. Heats were won by Brightbill and Bunting.
The 20 lap Super Late Model feature was a wild affair that took four attempts to get the first lap in and by that point had eliminated Bryan Driver and Rick Whaley. When the first lap did get in it was pole sitter, Donald Lingo, Jr. pulling away with second heat winner, David Hill running in second an rookie Andrew Mullins in third.
Mullins and Hill made contact in the second turn on lap four with both cars getting around and collecting Hal Browning. Mark Byram in the Charles Jarvis No. 45 was making an impressive return to the division and had used the outside groove to climb from 18th to fifth.
Ray Davis, Jr. restarted behind Lingo but could not match the leader’s lap times. Byram climbed by David Pettyjohn, Robinson and Davis to take second on lap seven. The yellow would erase Lingo’s lead one final time on lap 12 as Barry Beauchamp came to a stop.
Byram made a bid on the restart but Lingo quickly moved to the high line where he was the quicker of the two. Kerry King cracked the top five with five to go. Byram closed to within two car lengths in the final turn but it was Lingo taking the opening night win in the Lingo Marine/Rocket/Lingo.
“We burned a lot of midnight oil over the winter,” said Lingo. “We didn’t have a very good taste in our mouth after last season. But we’ve worked real had to get things turned around this season and it is good to get an opening night win.”
Byram served notice that he is back finishing in second with Davis third. Fourth went to David Pettyjohn and King rounded out the top five.
Nick Davis led the first five laps of the 15 lap Crate Model feature before Joe Warren used the outside groove in the second turn to take the lead. Jack Mullins got by Davis at the halfway sign to set up a good three car battle.
With three to go Mullins was challenging the leader but got sideways with two to go and Davis moved back into second. Warren, in the Big Fish Grill/Lazer, took the win with Davis second and Chris Hitchens coming from 10th to finish in third. Matt Hill finished in the fourth spot and Clint Chalabala rounded out the top five. Davis set fast time in qualifying.
The division set what may be a Crate Model record. All 23 starters finished the race and all 23 finished on the lead lap!
Scott Baker led the first four laps of the 15 lap AC Delco Modified feature before Joseph Tracy, who started in fourth moved on top. A series of cautions at the mid-point of the race kept the field tightly bunched. Westley Smith climbed to second and pressured Tracey to the finish.
Tracey, in the Virgil Davis Trucking/Milford Rent All/Dirt Wheels took the win with Smith finishing second. Baker held on for third with John Curtis and Matt Hawkins rounding out the top five. Baker set fast time in qualifying.
Steve White started on the pole of the 15 lap Mod Lite feature by virtue of his fast time in qualifying. Kevin McKinney and Brandon Dennis gave close chase from second and third with James Hill and Tim White in the top five.
A scary moment happened on lap 11 when Landis Musser clipped the rear bumper of another car and went for a series of end over end flips. Musser was complaining of pain in his neck and back so a bar was cut from his roll cage to allow emergency crews easier access. Once removed, he was airlifted to Christiana Hospital where he was held over night. At the time of this writing he was expected to be released sometime Sunday.
On the restart McKinney began to challenge for the lead. Going into the third turn McKinney got into the back bumper of White. White’s car began to spin but McKinney had the presence of mind to push him straight again and both were able to continue. Dennis took advantage of the near tangle and took the lead with young James Hill following into second.
Coming off the final turn, Dennis, Hill and Steve White were three wide with Dennis, in the Back in Action/Pro/ZX12 winning the drag race to the checkered. Hill finished in second with White third. Fourth went to McKinney and Tim White rounded out the top five.
This Saturday night the United Racing Company Sprint Cars join the five weekly divisions. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oval Track Promotions
April 10, 2010
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Virginia driver Walker Arthur was victorious in the
headline Steel Block Bandits series event on the opening weekend of
racing on Friday and Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County
Speedway.
Arthur, of Forest, Va., overcame a bad start to reclaim the lead for
the $3,000 win in the 40-lap feature. Weekend winners in other
divisions included Bill Replogle and Jimmy Lepley on Friday night, and
Daryl Whetstone and Gary Proctor on Saturday night.
Arthur, who set the fastest time and won a heat race in the debut of
the Bandits series at The Rock, started on the pole. When the race
went green, Arthur slid high in the first turn and dropped four spots.
Matt Sponaugle temporarily led the race until a multi-car crash in
turn four before the first lap was official put the field back to its
original order and reinstalled Arthur on the pole.
Arthur got it right on the second attempt, and led the race through
three more cautions over Sponaugle, Allen Brannon, Andy Fries, Matt
Howsare and Daniel Cornman.
Fries’ night ended on lap 13 and set up Sponaugle to make his first
challenge to Arthur’s lead. On the restart the Wiley Ford, W.Va.,
driver pulled even with Arthur in first turn but was denied the lead
when Arthur battled back on the high side. The race settled down until
after the fuel stop at lap 20.
Cornman became a factor after taking third from Brannon on lap 25 and
the race up front heated up on the next three laps. Sponaugle drove
inside of Arthur again, and both drivers rubbed fenders in turn four
and again in turn two on the next lap. Arthur kept the lead and
Cornman grabbed second away from Sponaugle on lap 28.
Arthur eventually built a three-second lead over Cornman until a
caution on the last lap left him with a six car length advantage over
Cornman, Howsare, Sponaugle and Brannon.
Friday’s feature action was highlighted by the last lap battle between
Bill Replogle and Marcius VanMeter in the Hobby Stock feature.
Replogle grabbed the early lead from VanMeter and R.T. Troutman.
VanMeter challenged Replogle in the final turn and pulled alongside
headed for the finish line. Replogle edged him out by a fender for the
victory. Troutman was third and Jimmy Sacco ended up fourth. Justin
Michael claimed the fifth spot.
Jimmy Lepley needed only three laps to take command of the 12-lap
Factory Stock 4-Cylinder race. Lepley, who started fifth, caught and
passed leader Mike Lauffer and drove off to win by a dozen car
lengths.
Steve Riggleman picked up second on lap nine to finish ahead of
Lauffer, who ended up third. Nick Iski and Mike Lewis completed the
top five.
On Saturday, Whetstone won his first feature event at The Rock since
1991 in a new car by driving away from runner-up Chris Chamberlain.
Whetstone needed until lap six to get to the inside of Chamberlain in
turn three. He went on to win by three seconds.
Behind Chamberlain, Mike Desch claimed third and Jerry Robinson and
John Whitfield completed the top five.
Proctor got the win after overcoming a spin on the backstretch among
the leaders in the 6/8-Cylinder feature. Proctor got the lead after
mixing it up with Jamie Mills and Ray Shepherd in the first eight
laps.
Shepherd finished second and Brian Ringer overcame a spin himself to
finish third. James Clark and Bob Imes completed the top five.
